OBS Design Fundamentals – Scene Source

One of the interesting features of OBS is that you can use a scene as a source. As I described in the OBS Design Fundamentals Introduction, a good way to think of scenes is to think of each scene as a camera in a news show. When switching to a new scene, not only can the perspective change but also the information presented.

However, unlike our camera analogy, you can create a scene and add sources to act as a template for your other scenes. A good example when to use the scene source is if you find yourself using the same sources multiple times in different scenes like an image background. Like the Group source, the Scene Source is also a great way to organize your sources, but I would recommend limiting using the Scene source to sources that you use multiple times like image sources, text sources, or media sources.

Create a Scene Source

In order to use the Scene Source, we will first have to add sources to the first scene and then create a second scene to then create the Scene Source itself.

  1. Click on the + sign under the Sources Window and select Color Source.
  2. Click on the OK button in the pop-up window.
  3. Click on the OK button to close the Color Source Properties.
  4. Click on the + sign under the Sources Window and Select Text Source.
  5. Click on the OK button in the pop-up window.
  6. Add the text “Scene 1” and then click on the OK button to close the Text Source Properties.
  7. Reposition the Text Source to the center of the Preview Window.
  8. Click on the + sign under the Scene Window.
  9. Click on the OK button to create Scene 2.
  10. Click on the + sign under the Sources Window and select Scene.
  11. Under the section “Add Existing” click on Scene and click on the OK button.

The Scene Source is a great source to use as a template for other scenes that will be using the same set of sources. One important part to understand about using scenes as a source is that any additional sources you add to the scene will also appear. So, if you add a color source or text source to “Scene 1”, those sources will also appear on “scene 2”. It is a good practice to rename scenes that you use as a source as a template to ensure that you do not alter the template source.
