Never Peak Your Stream Audio Again – How To Setup the Limiter Audio Filter in OBS

If you’re trying to make your stream better, then you should focus on managing your audio so that no matter what game you are streaming or how loud you get you or your game audio won’t be peaking causing your viewers to be deaf. The more stable and consistent your audio is, the more you can focus on your content when you are live.

So instead of constantly messing with the fader for your audio sources, you should use the limiter audio filter for your audio sources.

Start with a -20db limiter for your audio sources and have a -10db limiter for your microphone.

Simply put, the limiter is a compressor filter. Compressors will detect when your audio has surpassed a threshold and will reduce the audio to stay within a range. The limiter filter acts as a wall where any audio that surpasses the threshold will only be heard at the threshold level.

In OBS the limiter filter has you set two settings. The first is the threshold. The threshold is the audio level you don’t want your audio source to surpass. For example, say you want to limit the audio level from your capture card from overtaking your voice. Then you should set the limiter threshold to -20db.

The second setting is the release. The release is how much time the limiter will take to stop compressing the audio level once the audio is below the threshold.

Release time is measured in milliseconds. So 60 ms means it will take the limiter .06 seconds to stop compressing audio.

To setup the limiter filter for your audio source here is what you need to do.

  1. In the audio mixer window, for the audio source you want to add an audio filter, click on the gear and select the Filters option.
  2. Under the audio filters, click on the + sign and select Limiter to create a Limiter filter.
  3. Set the desired threshold and release and click close.

From now on the limiter will prevent any audio from going past the threshold preventing any audio from peaking or overtaking any other audio source.
